UV LED Applications in Oilfield Wastewater Treatment

Oilfield wastewater often contains large amounts of organic pollutants, heavy metal ions, and pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. Traditional wastewater treatment methods rely on chemical disinfection, sedimentation, and biological treatment, but these methods often suffer from high costs, unstable results, and secondary pollution. UV LED technology, on the other hand, offers an efficient, environmentally friendly, and energy-saving solution.

Wastewater pretreatment to remove large suspended solids and grease

Before UV LED treatment, oilfield wastewater requires preliminary physical pretreatment. This typically includes:

  • Coarse filtration: Using a coarse filter or filter tank to remove large particles of impurities such as silt, sawdust, etc.
  • Grease separation: Using an oil-water separator or flotation tank to remove floating oil and grease from the wastewater to prevent it from interfering with UV LED disinfection.

Effect: After removing large particles, harmful substances in the wastewater are more dispersed, making it easier to disinfect with UV LEDs.

Water conditioning and preparation

Ensure the wastewater's pH and temperature are suitable for UV LED disinfection. Oilfield wastewater often has a high or low pH, which may affect UV LED disinfection effectiveness. Adjust the water's pH by adding acid or alkali to bring it within the optimal operating range for UV LEDs (typically pH 6-8). UV LEDs have a wide range of water temperature requirements, but excessively high or low water temperatures can affect UV penetration and disinfection effectiveness. A water temperature between 5-40°C is generally recommended. Ensure that the water quality is suitable for UV LED disinfection to avoid reduced treatment effectiveness due to poor water quality.

LED irradiation

LED irradiation uses UV LEDs to kill pathogenic microorganisms and organic pollutants in water. Select the appropriate UV LED wavelength based on the microbial species in the wastewater. A common disinfection wavelength is 254nm (UVC band), which is suitable for destroying the DNA/RNA structures of bacteria and viruses. A UV LED reactor is set up, with UV LED lamps installed in a specially designed reactor. Wastewater is introduced into the reactor via a water flow. The time the water is in contact with the UV LED light source (i.e., UV exposure time) is a key factor in determining treatment effectiveness. A "flow cell" and "spiral pipe" design are commonly used to ensure sufficient contact between the water and the UV light source. By adjusting the UV LED power and water flow rate, the UV radiation intensity and contact time are optimized to ensure that all microorganisms in the wastewater are fully disinfected. The UV LED's ultraviolet light penetrates the water, effectively destroying the DNA/RNA of bacteria and viruses, thereby achieving sterilization and disinfection.

  • The disinfection effect is stable, adaptable to varying water quality, and unaffected by water temperature or pH. It is suitable for treating various types of wastewater, including domestic, industrial, and oilfield wastewater.
